Our GC was a wonderful person, who was motivated to become a GC through her wanting to help others experience parenthood. We felt she really treated the pregnancy as she would have for her own child, and was very organized and communicative staying on top of scheduling appointments, giving us insights into each step and what to expect (from her own personal and professional experience), and always giving us updates. Even though we both lead different and busy lives during our journey ahead of our baby’s arrival, we found a great balance of communication and rapport!
This process can take a while overall, and the beginning of a search through leading up to signing an agreement with the GC can feel like a lot of steps and back and forth. The agency was very helpful in terms of managing communications, and at times more importantly, managing expectations. Even sharing that there are no updates, can be a valuable update, especially for anxious and excited intended parents. The communication was clear and direct, which is essential in having a good experience during something as emotionally charged as this journey to becoming parents.
The agency staff were wonderful partners, helping answer questions, manage logistics, and act as a crucial go-between to help handle and initiate some of the more serious or emotionally charged conversations that can come up at the start of the journey and along the way. They were reliably prompt and thorough in all of their communications, and having that confidence in a partner goes a long way when you are navigating this process, and may feel lacking in control over other parts of this journey from time to time. As first time parents, there was no question too strange or silly, and the agency staff was always sensitive to our experience and made us feel comfortable to ask anything and be able to lean on them as a resource. Having that additional support, and insights from their vast experience with helping families through this process, was invaluable.
The advice we received was always prompt, thorough, and proved accurate and helpful to us. Whether it was asking what to expect in legal discussions, or what is standard or typical for elements or dynamics of the process or relationship management with the GC, the agency staff were there to offer guidance and recommendations in a reassuring and nuanced way.
The agency did a great job making sure that all parties felt understood, accurately represented, and advocated for, in this at-times tricky dynamic. They walked the fine line between offering experience-based recommendations and honoring the feelings and preferences of all parties involved. The most important relationship you have in this process is with the GC, but the close second is with the agency staff, to help smooth the way and enable you to maintain a good relationship with the GC when navigating through things that may not initially feel clear.
