This was my first journey, so it was a learning curve! I think that there are just things that you don’t know if you don’t know. There were some questions I didn’t know to ask until certain situations arose. But my contacts with the agency were helpful when it happened.
I think that a lot of surrogacy is a waiting game. It’s no one’s individual fault! I will say that I had several contacts through the agency — it would be nice and simple if it were cut down to 1-2 people for point of contact through the entire journey rather than a new contact at each phase.”
It is a little unnerving to sit by and wait for a conversation to happen without you though — in an instance where there is a minor conflict or confusion between IP’s and surrogate, for instance. Rather than coming together as a group to speak together, it’s all done through the agency. It worked out fine, it was just a little different than the conflict resolution I’m used to!
Also, I loved my IPs, but their fertility clinic made me feel very much like I wasn’t a person. They went behind my back to talk to my IPs about me rather than asking me to clarify questions. They did not abide by my wishes to have a female provider perform the transfer procedure. The IPs are understandably their patients, but surrogates become patients, too. I kind of felt like I was just cattle to be impregnated to them. Their communication has and continues to be horrible as well.
